Associate Director

Desired candidate will be part of the Research & Development global team comprised of nine people with no direct reports. Candidate will be responsible for supporting the overall TD/MS&T(referred to TD) P&L line for Vaccines (~$200m of direct expenses). In addition, Candidate will be responsible for reviewing and understanding Research and Development, which is comprised of ~ $300m Development and $100m Research costs. Ideal Candidate embraces getting into the lowest level of detail as well as having strategic discussions. The TD organization represents ~350 FTE’s, with R&D representing an additional ~875 FTE’s. The TD is growing with the current completion of the Viral plant in Holly Springs, Bacterial plant in Tuscany and the new manufacturing facility in Brazil. Development is expanding clinical trials into 30+ countries, with the number of subjects increasing from ~42,000 in 2012 to over 70,000 in late 2013.

Job Responsibilities:
• Co-ordinate with Head of R&D Finance, all aspects of the Budget and Forecasts, for the TD organization. Prepare summary TD presentation to Divisional CEO and CFO, which include: Presentations and Strategy, Financial Results, Headcount and Projects.
• Significantly contribute to the monthly financial reporting process communicating current and projected financial status and proposing remediation activities if necessary.
• Provide monthly reports by functional area as well as to the TD Leadership teams. Additionally, help meet the reporting timelines and deliverables of V&D Divisional Finance.
• Explore pathways to reduce cycle time in all processes providing greater value added commentary and business advisory services to TD.
• Working with the Clinical Development Team (GPT’s and Clusters), accurately forecast the current financial scenarios associated with changes to the Technical Development plan. Incorporate changes into accruals, monthly close process and rolling strategic plan.
• Prepare Presentations and financial requirements for all IT projects required to obtain Investment Committee, Executive Committee, NITB or if necessary, Novartis Board level project approvals.
• Prepare ad hoc confidential information for Innovation Board, as well as providing guidance and alternative recommendations.
• Review monthly country FCRS submissions for accuracy, evaluate costs trends and take corrective action if necessary.

Minimum requirements    Job Requirements:
• B.S. in Finance/Accounting or equivalent required. MBA or other advanced degree preferred. CPA/CFM/CA designation preferred.
• Minimum 6 years pharmaceutical/vaccines and/or business experience including a significant understanding of financial processes (Strategic Plans, Budgets, Forecasts, and Monthly Financial Reporting).
• Candidate should have an understanding of the Technical and Clinical Development process. In addition, Candidate should be familiar with grant reimbursement contracts from governmental and quasi governmental organizations.
• Significant systems experience required in SAP, Business Warehouse, as well as, the full suite of Microsoft Office Products.
• Proven ability to communicate findings/issues/knowledge to various levels of management.
• Ability to work in a virtual environment and communicate with Novartis employees regardless of location and across the Novartis group of companies.
• Significant communication skills, both verbal and written, are required as the Candidate will be working across many sites, locations and functions.
• Effectively train and develop employees regardless of direct/indirect reporting relationship.
• Successfully manage complex business issues in a matrix organization, requiring a significant level of co-ordination, communication and process.
