Day to Day Responsibilities:

    * Work in a multi-disciplinary research, development, and engineering environment to identify opportunities for advanced controls.
    * Determine control challenges, value propositions, and write proposals to initiate control projects.
    * Propose and define project objective, scope, timeline and deliverables, and identify and seek resources to meet project needs.
    * Be familiar with various instrumentation and control techniques, perform control system assessments, and provide recommendations for control system maintenance and upgrades.
    * Utilize data analysis skills, including multivariate statistical analysis, frequency analysis, etc., to provide system understanding leading to control design.
    * Conduct or collaborate with experts in other fields on control oriented process modeling.
    * Design and develop innovative advanced control solutions to meet technical challenges and implement solutions for R&D and manufacturing processes.
    * Work closely with experts in other disciplines or functions in project teams to develop controls and integrate other related technology such as process sensing and modeling.
    * Leverage optimization techniques to improve process performance and efficiency.
    * Utilize advanced controls skills to implement solutions such as linear and non-linear controls, model predictive control, intelligent control, supervisory controls.
    * Generate intellectual property through appropriate technical reports, invention disclosures and patent applications.

Travel Requirements:

Up to 20% travel may be required, including international

Job Title: Controls Scientist / Engineer

Required Education:

    * Recent Ph.D. graduate in Mechanical Engineering with a background in control systems and additional background in thermal systems modeling and model-based control.
    * Chemical or Electrical engineering applicants with a strong background in control systems will also be considered.

Required Skills:

    * Background in heat transfer, thermodynamics, or experience modeling thermal processes for control system design.
    * Experience in design, development, and implementation of model-based control especially model predictive for control of thermal processes.
    * Background in control systems engineering including optimal, multivariable, and nonlinear methods.
    * The ability to communicate and sell technical ideas and initiatives.
    * Strong problem solving skills and demonstrated ability to work independently or on a team to develop technology.

Desired Skills:

    * Knowledge of intelligent control theory, system identification, signal processing, and data analysis.
    * Understanding of R&D and the skills required to effectively provide advanced controls and systems technology into R, D & E.
    * Experience in manufacturing and an understanding the skills required to introduce advanced technology into manufacturing.
    * Experience using programming, simulation, and modeling tools such as Matlab/Simulink, C/C++, VB.
    * Leadership of cross-functional and cross-disciplinary groups.

    * Strong technical curiosity and willingness to learn.
    * Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with people of diverse cultures and technical backgrounds and across technologies, disciplines, and functions.
