Communication Engineer

Smart Grid is the next big infrastructure play for Cisco that aims to allow connected utilities to supply electricity in a more efficient and sustainable way and consumers to gain better efficiency and control of their energy consumption. By providing a secure, IP-based communications infrastructure from generation to home and business, Cisco Smart Grid solutions are designed to bridge multiple technologies and an ecosystem of partners to optimize communications, improve resilience and reduce the operational cost of energy systems, which can boost global economical growth and environmental sustainability.

Smart Grid is looking for an experienced Power Line Communication (PLC) engineer to help build the PLC mesh network product for smart grid networks comprised of millions of devices including electric meters, grid sensors/controllers, edge routers, etc. The key challenges are the sheer number of devices and the complexities in building and managing large-scale mesh networks over losses and low-power networks.

* Build and maintain network protocols for PLC mesh networks on embedded devices running TinyOS
* Build and maintain Cisco's Connected Grid Reference Design SDK on resource/power-constrained embedded platforms
* Support the network management team on management of the PLC mesh network endpoints
* Support the hardware team on compliance testing

* Proficiency in embedded programming in C on resource/power-constrained micro-controllers
* Experiences with power line communication
* Understanding of internet protocols
* Ability to come up to speed quickly on new networking technology
* Experience with TinyOS or similiar embedded operating systems a plus
* Knowledge of PLC standards such as IEEE P1901.2, G3 or PRIME a plus
* Knowledge of wireless sensor networks a plus
* Excellent communication skills
