Associate Dean

The Capella University Harold Abel School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SOSBS) Psychology department has an opening for a full-time Associate Dean.  This is a full-time leadership position.  The Associate Dean, SOSBS-Psychology will need to be able to travel as needed and be able to work remotely as well as work onsite at Capella University headquarters in Minneapolis at least 25% of time (typically one week per month).    The anticipated/estimated hire date for the position is end of December 2012 or early January 2013.

Associate Deans are responsible for the following main areas:

Operational Management - including:

- The Associate Dean actively participates in the creation of University and school's vision and strategic objectives and translates strategic objectives into cross-functional operational plans that ensure academic programs successfully meet organization, market, and learning goals.  The Associate Dean also participates in the establishment of metrics and targets for the school related to persistence, learner satisfaction, quality, faculty performance/engagement, and graduation rates and establishes and builds internal and external partnerships/relationships that drive success for the University, school, and programs/specializations.  In addition, the Associate Dean provides input to the School Dean in support of the creation of the Annual Operating Plan (AOP).

- The Associate Dean works with the Dean to ensure SOSBS is responding to the needs of the marketplace, and differentiating themselves from competition in terms of program offerings.  To realize desired outcomes, the Associate Dean is expected to take a leadership role in understanding learners and their concerns, working with faculty to develop the right programs and courses to meet market needs, and recruiting the right faculty to execute the programs.

- Responsible for ensuring that courses and curriculum reflects current knowledge in the field; are professionally relevant; and are delivered by experts in the subject matter pertaining to the courses. Manages the implementation of continuous improvement initiatives in learner success, academic quality and curricula development.  Works with School staff and faculty to conduct quarterly evaluations of courses and faculty to comply with the AQIP assessment goals.

- Ensures application of Capella's learning model (the Capella Way) - consistent teaching philosophy, tools, best practices, academic polices, are successfully implemented.  Leads efforts to ensure awareness of and compliance with Capella's Academic and related policies. Provide oversight for management of escalated incidents.  Serves on academic committees charged with policy development, accreditation, AQIP, and related initiatives.

- Provide direction and coordination to meet any applicable accreditation standards in support of strategic and operational plan, Governance or Scholarly Activity. Improves quality through the development and execution of practices that utilize the dashboards and other metrics as well as the application of evidence-based management practices,

- Learner Management - Resolves learner issues and complaints (following learner problem resolution process) beyond the scope of the faculty chair.  May also be involved in overseeing the residency planning process for assigned program areas and ensure availability of curriculum and faculty resources.
