Plastics Assembler
Mechanics in this position assemble and install various composite and metal parts/assemblies for the wing and fuselage sub assemblies. These sub assemblies are later incorporated in larger assemblies that are subsequently installed on the airplane. Employment in this position also requires occasional (1-3 hours) lifting and carrying less than 10 pounds, rotation of head/neck, standing, walking, use of low impact vibratory tools, finger manipulation, flexion/extension, contact with metals, plastics, solvents and the use of personal safety gear for face, eyes, hand and ears. Additional Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities: Locate work area using drawings which specifies airplane number, section number, and three-point location. Obtain and verify kitted (pre-picked) detail parts, standards, and assemblies were issued correctly. Ensure that parts issued are effective for the airplane and are free of visible defects. If parts are not pre-picked, get parts and ensure that parts selected are effective for the airplane and are free of visible defects. Set up assembly tools per tooling instructions or drawing. Review bar chart or automated time line to determine which job to work on and obtain appropriate drawings for job. Locate tools and/or parts on airplane using tooling holes, pilot holes, K holes, or by hand (as required), per drawing or tooling instructions. Align parts and secure in place using Clecos or tooling/hand clamps. Check for good edge margins and alignment. Shim and/or trim parts. Select drill bits, reamers and/or countersinking tools for pilot and full size holes. Drill pilot holes using drill motor and proper size drill bit(s). Drill, ream, countersink full size holes in parts/assemblies, in proper sequence and to correct size using drill motor. Set countersinking tools to proper depth. Disassemble parts and deburr holes using chip chasers, deburring tools, and files to prepare for installation of fasteners. Use solvents to clean surfaces prior to sealing or assembly. Apply sealant, alodine, primer, adhesives, and special finishes. Load and unload ovens to bond detail parts to assemblies. Apply permanent or temporary part mark and protective material to assemblies for preparation of shipment. Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in approved manner. Determine and obtain correct type and size fasteners. Install fasteners in correct sequence per drawing, using correct tools (e.g., rivet gun and bucking bar, drill motor, power screwdriver, C-squeeze, ratchet wrench, nut runner). Check work after completion of each operation in job and/or completed job to ensure it is complete per drawing.
