Although most companies aren't forthcoming about how and why that firing takes ... Some large companies will put an employee on an improvement plan.

When a big company fires one non-executive. For any reason (or no reason), the employee is "let go" and is no longer wanted by his/her manager. Most large companies have procedures that HR goes through, such as an exit interview, collection of laptop/equipment by IT, and some basic paperwork acknowledging non-disclosure/non-compete. They send the person off with a folder of items including paperwork for COBRA, and some info to help with getting employed again such as employment agencies, career counseling, job placement assistance groups, etc. When someone is terminated, severance is usually nothing, unless they had it written into their employment contract. This whole process often occurs first thing in the AM or end of the day on a Friday, and usually well in advance of a major holiday, but one never knows.

I only ever heard of one guy getting fired. I think he got rich from stock and just stopped working, basically waiting to get fired. It's really very hard to get fired from Google. They put a TON of effort into trying to prevent it.

most difficult part of any manager’s job is telling a subordinate that he can no longer stay with the company — that he’s been “fired,” “let go,” “dismissed,” or otherwise taken off the payroll. It’s a gut-wrenching conversation, knowing how this simple act affects a person’s career, self-esteem, and livelihood. Firing an employee also affects everyone else on your team. Not only does it change work assignments, but it also makes people wonder about your judgment as a manager and their own job security.Given these emotional undercurrents, many managers let anxiety drive the firing process instead of intellect, making a difficult moment even worse. For example, I know of a senior manager who walked unannounced into his employee’s office, junior HR person in-tow, and declared: “You’ve been fired. Our HR associate will answer your questions and then escort you out of the building.” The manager then exited, leaving the shocked (former) employee and the ill-prepared HR person staring awkwardly at each other. What made this situation even worse is that the senior manager had given no previous indication of the employee’s performance difficulties and had given him nothing but positive feedback in the previous six months. Now, suddenly, the reason for the firing was “lack of teamwork.” And because it was “for cause,” no severance was offered and pay was terminated immediately.

In US, Microsoft fires people quite often. Since it followed stack ranking someone has to be ranked lowest and the management chain tries to look good to their bosses by firing those people. For almost all employees its only a matter of "WHEN" you will be forced to leave rather than "IF". Getting stack ranked low could happen for a number of reasons other than just performance, the project/work assigned might have been abandoned, manager dint try hard to get justifiable rating etc.Even though they announced removal of stack ranking recently, still the management needs someone to blame and I doubt if layoffs will decrease. Some smart engineers there make sure they are up to date on latest trend of things in technology going outside microsoft and keep interviewing actively to make the switch, while people who don't have hard time finding other jobs when they are fired suddenly.I have seen several high profile people like distinguished scientists, researchers, principal group program managers who have been layed off and had resort to contract jobs to make ends meet.

Outside government jobs, you don't really need a solid reason to get fired.

They can lay off citing recession, or losses in consecutive fianacial quarters as being reason.
