Sr Consultant
Responsibilities:
The activities for this position include, but are not limited to, supervision of multiple RSO’s, collection and interpretation/evaluation of data related to measurement of ionizing radiation, development of operational plans for each site in the program, analyses of operational health physics practices at each site and conformance with regulations and laws in effect in the jurisdiction of use, review and analysis of field reports from Site RSO’s, continuous improvement practices in developing operational health physics at each site. Ensure conformance to applicable technical standards, regulatory and legal requirements, as well as company policies and procedures.
* Use expertise in operational health physics to help drive financial and operational solutions across the operations at each site. Integrate safety and compliance into all operations.
* Ability to influence internal customers and site operators to assure operational objectives.
* Develop and leverage key relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to identify and support business needs.
* Verifies the program is compliant with all relevant regulations, technical standards, laws and other policies or procedures that may be established and leverage relationships with internal and external stakeholders to help shape policy where regulations are vague and ambiguous.
Qualifications:
* Has depth and breadth of experience in health physics as well as capability to integrate a basic knowledge of business and functional priorities based upon overall project schedules and deliverables.
* Experience in creating, delivering and managing evolving content of an effective operational health physics training program.
* Familiar and experienced with a variety of portable radiological survey instrumentation and the selection and suitability of various instruments for performance of surveys and data collection across a broad spectrum of ionizing radiation energies.
* Ability to conduct and document radiological worker training for project staff and conduct periodic professional development and refresher training and “Train-the-Trainer” programs for Site RSO’s and Site Operators.
* Shall be involved in all surveys and practices as related to collection of information and data as part of investigation in to breach of action levels or threshold triggers as related to the ALARA Occupational Exposure Control Plan.
* Act as key contributor in complex operating environments in the formulation of operating procedures at each site.
* Ability to lead teams or projects and share expertise with others.
* Ability to apply in-depth technical/scientific skills with broad knowledge of operational health physics and regulations to craft best practices while mindful of the business realties specific to each operating site.
* Interpret impact of internal and external business issues and recommend “best practices” to assure compliance and safety are maintained (includes risk considerations for extra shift work, overtime, up-tempo operations, inclement weather, etc.)
* Maintains visibility of costs associated with managing the radiation safety program.
* Must be able to manage own time to meet stated program objectives, forecasts and plans resource requirements for pending projects.
* Must be able to communicate and navigate vertically and horizontally through the organization.
* Must have demonstrated working knowledge of all regulatory issues pertaining to sites utilizing equipment producing ionizing radiation, including but not limited to, requirements for license, permits, certifications and registrations.
* Bachelor’s degree in Physical Science, Life Science, Biological Sciences, Physics, Nuclear Engineering or related fields. Master’s degree in Physical or Life Sciences, Physics, or Nuclear Engineering preferred.
* Comprehensive certification by the American Board of Health Physics (PREFERRED) ten to fifteen years of applied health physics experience in a program with a radiation safety environment similar to that of the program to be managed is required.
* (MANDATORY) Thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of health physics and radiation protection. Radiation dosimetry and the theory, methods and equipment used to measure radiation levels. General knowledge of the various parameters entering into the evaluation of radiological hazards and the biological effects of ionizing radiation in the laboratory use of radio isotopes.
* Working knowledge of the State and Federal radiation control laws and codes; working knowledge of atomic and nuclear physics and chemistry and radioactive waste disposal techniques and procedures.
* Ability to plan and conduct difficult and complex investigations of radiological health hazards; ability to analyze situations and take effective actions; ability to speak and write effectively.
* Ability to be recognized and certified as a Class B RSO for CLASS B-1 radiation facilities
* Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form.
* Ability to establish and maintain professional and effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other departments, and external entities each of which require cooperative efforts on both sides. Must be able to travel locally and internationally at least 30% of the time.
