Global Category Leader

THIS ROLE COULD BE BASED OUT OF BASEL OR EAST HANOVER.

Set up and manage category sourcing projects to deliver maximum value to the Functional owners of the spend category in General Medicines, Oncology Business Unit and Translational Sciences.

1. Develop and own global category strategies for specified clinical categories as needed (e.g. investigator grants, CROs, Data Mgt., Stats, Central Labs, Cardiac Safety, Imaging, etc.)
• Develop and implement innovative sourcing strategies which address all spend levers and are in alignment with the relevant Functional business objectives.
• Develop and maintain category Sourcing Plans

2. Develop a forward looking category strategy that is communicated in a written document, updated yearly or as significant events dictate, and is endorsed by Senior functional stakeholders.

3. Set up and conduct projects within the assigned spend category(s) which maximize the value and efficiency of the spend on behalf of the Novartis Functional owner(s). Project activities will include:
• Conduct opportunity analysis and set up / manage teams
Creating full spend transparency for the category.
• Demonstrate value creation and spend efficiency improvement in the category through creation and application of relevant spend baselines, KPIs and metrics.
• Assess opportunities for continuous improvement of category spend efficiency based on industry best practices and benchmarks.
• Apply e-sourcing technologies and Low Cost Country Sourcing as an integral part of the category sourcing strategy.
• Plan and execute the projects according to the expectations of the Functional Stakeholders.
• Analyze competitive forces in the market place and between suppliers to create leverage for Novartis sourcing strategies

4. Set-up, lead and manage cross functional category teams by:
• Determine the team structure and resource requirements necessary to develop and implement the category sourcing strategy(s).
• Assemble the project team by securing resource involvement and funding as required.
• Lead the project team though strategy development and implementation, planning including embedding the sourcing strategies in the Functions.

5. Stakeholder engagement:
• Determine and secure an effective Governance structure for the projects.
• Keep Stakeholders informed of progress and involving them in issue resolution as appropriate.
• Manage expectations of Stakeholders.

6. Ensure that the Category Management and Supplier Relationship Management processes are followed as a key business process and mobilize the business to ensure that Global Sourcing is perceived as value adding business partner.

7. Develop RFI, RFPs, as needed for the category and assist with negotiating certain contract aspects.

8. Develop spending and cost savings analysis and reports for the category.
Minimum requirements    1. Broad business experience to include purchasing/sourcing in progressive companies where best in class practices are employed. (minimum of 5 years business experience)

2. Experience in evaluating spend categories.

3. Strong leadership and effective business partnering capabilities.

4. Ability to lead cross-functional teams in a complex organization with minimal oversight.

5.University (Bachelors) in a scientific field or Bachelors degree with related experience; relevant advanced degree in scientific/clinical experience. Graduate Degree in Business (Preferred) Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM) or equivalent related experience.

6. Understanding of category management processes.

7. Minimum of three years direct Category Management or related experience.
