Infrastructure Engineering
Microsoft IT (MSIT) has one of the most exciting and challenging IT environments in the world. Delivering services that enable our customers, our partners, and our employees to be the best they can be and using the products we make in groundbreaking ways makes this one of the most invigorating positions available in Microsoft or anywhere in the world.
As a Director of Infrastructure Architecture you will drive a team of architects to deliver capabilities across all of our business units and product lines. This role will be leading a team of senior IT Professionals and architects to develop strategy and vision for Compute, Storage, and Network Services in MSIT. The pace is quick and never boring, and you will be working with some of the best architects in the industry leveraging leading edge technology.
Job Duties:
• Provide technical leadership by leading the creation of a vision for roadmaps that enable delivery of expected results. As part of this, you will remove obstacles for alignment of architectural direction, strategy, and models across MSIT. Additionally, you will collaborate with other architects located in other Shared Services Units (SSUs) and Business Process Units (BPUs) across MSIT, and the Enterprise Architecture (EA) team in order to minimize duplication of effort and maximize business value. You will also drive collaboration with other teams, set directions for prioritizing resources, coach individuals and enable best practice. You’ll also help define technology strategies for large and complex engagements and ensure the intent of the architecture is met.
• Maintain business to technology strategy by translating business intent to technology implementation that can be maintained and operated to the satisfaction of the end user and meets all scorecard metrics for the larger organization. You will drive optimization of current business practices and strategy and coach others in order to enable knowledge transfer across the team. You will also use you knowledge of business, industry, and technology trends to ensure sustainable designs are delivered that maintain value over at least 3 years.
• Execute practical and adoptable architectures that satisfy customer needs, add business value, and reduce risks. As a leader of other architects you will drive consistent use of architectural methods, tools, and technology across multiple divisions and govern multiple engagements. You will also be responsible for collecting evidence of the business value provided by the architect team as well as ensure relevant IP is incorporated into the centralized repository for MSIT.
• Balance the pillars of trustworthy delivery (predictable, innovative, sustainable, and capable) to deliver adoptable outcomes to your audience. You will evangelize adherence to governance, a trustworthy delivery strategy, and evangelize the differences between desire and need in order to provide valuable insights to the program or project sponsors.
• Apply methods, procedures, standards, tools, and best practice to assess, analyze, and create descriptive designs that are influenced by the entire ecosystem the solution will operate in rather than taking a project-level view. You will drive creation of innovative ideas to create next-generation models that are feasible and deliverable, and leverage/reuse assets stored in the centralized repository as well as ensure your IP becomes part of that repository. You will also deliver designs and action plans to achieve targeted goals and provide measurable value back to the business unit, division, customer, or partner.
• Develop consumable and aligned roadmaps to incorporate futures state and emerging technologies and approaches into design. The roadmaps will reflect a whole systems view that is aligned with enterprise level roadmaps and strategies. As such, you will be accountable to deliver an approach for moving from the current state to the future state you have envisioned and define the steps in the roadmap to achieve success. The roadmaps you create will have impact across multiple divisions and ensure the alignment of cross-platform or integrated solutions.
