Analytical Specialist

At Merck & Co., Inc Manufacturing facility in Elkton, Virginia, we currently have a Senior Analytical Specialist position available at the Stonewall Plant; which is located in the Shenandoah Valley along the Shenandoah River and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The facility is just a short distance from major state universities: University of Virginia and James Madison University.
The Senior Analytical Specialist will be a member of the Technical Operations Department at the Elkton, VA site. The Elkton plant, also known as Stonewall, is located in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley and opened in 1941. The site employs a wide array of state of the art manufacturing technologies to support the production of pharmaceuticals including organic synthesis, biotechnology and sterile filling operations.
The Senior Analytical Specialist will play a key role in the oversight of day-to-day laboratory work, along with leading investigations and troubleshooting of unique protein chemistry-related issues. Proteins to be analyzed will include natural products, therapeutic proteins and vaccines.
Extensive fundamental and practical knowledge of protein biochemistry combined with experience in bioprocessing are required to provide process support. Experience in a late stage process development and characterization and functioning in a cGMP environment would be advantageous.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:
· Lead process investigations
· Apply their enthusiasm for the scientific process to lead, plan and execute protein characterization studies.
· Use and train others to use analytical techniques including low and high pressure chromatography, mass spectroscopy as well as other biochemical and immunological methods to purify, quantify and characterize target proteins.
· Employ strong verbal and written communication skills.
· Work both independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
