The E.W. Scripps Company is seeking a director of digital research. This individual will direct and control the activities of the research function accountable for helping to inform the organization’s decisions about the company’s overall digital strategy, including supporting new business and product development. The digital research director is responsible for providing insightful and actionable analysis of metrics and key performance indicators for existing businesses while simultaneously identifying new opportunities for the company through industry, trend and local research. Key activities • Guide the development and execution of data-driven and customer focused research programs for digital businesses. • Define desirable audience segments for advertising programs, understand scope and characteristics of target segments, and develop strategies to grow and engage them. • Research and track competitive trends and user responses and recommends changes to marketing strategies, content or products based on findings. • Support new business and product development by identifying market opportunities with cross-functional teams. • Manage a team providing research support to various departments and properties. • Direct the development of research goals and methods for measuring market responses to sites, products and marketing campaigns. • Ensure that new market segments are researched and identified and that appropriate, targeted programs are developed for those segments deemed important. • Understand, manage, and work hands-on with contemporary online statistics and print metrics, including Scripps' own tools for analyzing its user registration databases, Omniture, Google Analytics and metrics from online ad serving suites such as DFP and APT. • Develop and maintain vendor relationships with analytics software providers, and ensure timely and effective staff training, upkeep of installed software, and performance of outside services. • Coordinate, execute and communicate measurement of audience for online, mobile and other emerging platforms. • Compile monthly and quarterly audience reports, along with executive level analysis and briefings. • Establish guidelines and processes to support local initiatives. • Interview, hire, train, plan, assign, direct work, appraise performance, reward and discipline, address concerns and resolve issues for direct reports. • Other duties as assigned. Education and experience/certifications • Must have a Bachelor's degree in marketing, statistics, or related field or equivalent experience. • Must have a minimum of 7 years of experience; including prior supervisory experience. Skills and abilities • Must have the ability to translate data into creative messaging to drive audience and revenue growth. • Must have the ability to manage people and campaigns across multiple platforms and geographies. • Must have the ability to lead industry-facing initiatives by networking, nurturing and leveraging others. • Must have the ability to prioritize growth opportunities based on ROI. • Must have mastery of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access) • Must have exceptional organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines. • Must have exceptional communication and presentation skills • Must have the ability to read, analyze, interpret and synthesize online audience and print circulation data to form insights and strategies that will drive new audience and maximize existing audience. • Must also have the ability to write reports and create PowerPoint presentations. • Must also be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
