Associate Technical

This is a position within Technical Publications, creating, developing, planning, writing and editing operational, instructional, maintenance or test procedures for paper, multimedia or web-based publication.  As a Technical Writer 2, this position will assume responsibility for developing both Field Service and Manufacturing documentation projects as assigned.  A TW2 conducts interviews with various users and technical staff to gather data for documentation.  Researches and translates technical information into procedures for technicians in Manufacturing, as well as Field Service Engineers supporting products at customer sites.  A TW2 is responsive to technical and internal customer requirements, and produces products that conform to the company documentation and quality assurance standards.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    * Writes task-oriented information targeted for different audiences.
    * Adheres to technical writing project requirements and deliverables, and researches complex source material for associated projects.
    * Works with program/project teams to develop field procedures, and software and hardware user documentation.
    * Works with engineers in lab and test environments, interviews technical staff, collects source material, and conducts procedure validation with cross-functional technical experts for use in the field.
    * Organizes material and completes writing assignment according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
    * Works closely with Engineering, Customer Support, and Technical Training to design, write, and deliver professional product documentation.
    * Meets with various departments to discuss document requirements and gather data to be included in the documents.
    * Reviews corporate standards to verify and update documentation conformance to environmental, health, and safety guidelines.
    * Tracks product updates and ensures that they are reflected in the documentation.
    * Participates in team meetings and contribute to the establishment of improved documentation processes.
    * Participates in project planning, attends project meetings, reviews written content, and coordinates technical review and validation cycles.
    * Participates in defining content development strategies and work with authors on how to create content per defined standards.
    * Maintains current knowledge of technical writing techniques, tools, methodologies, and user interface development guidelines.
    * Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications
 

    * Excellent written, verbal, and oral communication skills.
    * Excellent customer service skills, with a good understanding of customer relationship building.
    * Ability to use MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and electronic e-mail systems.
    * Familiar with authoring tools and editors, such as HTML and XML editors, Adobe software, or FrameMaker.
    * Excellent writing skills and experience with databases.
    * Ability to accurately interpret engineering and other technical material and information.
    * Knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering; ability to read schematics a strong plus.
    * Ability to adapt quickly to change and work successfully in an evolving environment.
    * High degree of self-motivation and strong orientation toward teamwork.
    * Knowledge of the technical writing process, including planning and development.
    * Ability to work in a very fast paced, deadline-driven environment.
    * Contributes to major documentation projects or improvement initiatives with multiple writers and other team members.
    * Excellent organization and planning skills with some project management experience.
    * Knowledge of object orientated databases and experience with content management systems.
    * Solid command of the English language and the ability to articulate complex technical concepts in written form.  Strong organizational and analytical skills.
    * Apply problem-solving skills to a wide range of complex problems related to creation and maintenance of documentation in creative and practical ways.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
General proficiency with tools, systems, and procedures required to accomplish the job.  May need to consult with higher level staff members on some technical issues. Minimum of two (2) years of experience is required.

    * Technical background or a technical degree.
    * High-level proficiency in FrameMaker, MS Word, and publishing tools, including template design.
    * Experience with DITA-compliant editors a strong plus (XMetaL)
