Scope of Position:
Scientist responsible for identifying and developing new processes and/or process conditions for improved product attributes or reduced cost of optical fiber manufacturing processes (laydown, consolidation, draw, …). Scope includes identification and development of new fiber making processes and new fiber products. Expectation of developing novel experiments and either developing new analytical techniques or utilizing existing techniques to gain fundamental understanding of underlying principles.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
* Designing experiments and analyzing data
* Developing new analytical tools or utilizing existing tools to support process development
* Collaborating with other process and modeling experts in other organizations
* Participating on cross functional teams
* Communicating and documenting results
* Managing product and process development efforts
Travel Requirements (please note if international): Few times a year, primarily Wilmington, NC

Required Education: MS in Chemistry, physics, materials science, or chemical engineering or equivalent
Required Years and Area of Experience: 5 yrs
Required Skills:
* M.S. or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Ceramic Science, Chemistry or the equivalent
* Demonstrated experience and strong technical knowledge in cross disciplined science based on graduate research (publications, research topics)
* Processing and impact on material properties and high temperature processing
* Experience and interest in hands on experimentation
* Diverse background in educational experience – either degree or interaction
* Experience in initiating research activities
* Innovative thinking, creative
* Ability to take an idea from concept to reality
* Understand value of using modeling as well as characterization and tools
* Good oral and written communication skills
* Ability to work effectively with diverse teams
* Working knowledge of physical phenomena (heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, etc.) and thermodynamics with a strong background in relating material properties to process conditions and product attributes
* Advanced problem solving skills
* Ability to design and carry out experiments

* Knowledge in optical materials and properties and Fiber process technologies
* Glass processing experience
* Experience with cross disciplinary teams
* Strong organization skills, ability to manage multiple tasks
* Self-starting individual with strong leadership potential
