Costing Manager
Description
This job description is not meant to be an all inclusive list of duties and responsibilities, but constitutes a general definition of the position's scope and function in the company.
General Position Summary:
Responsible for the Columbia Sportswear Company apparel product costing process to ensure that our products are designed, engineered and consistently priced at a competitive cost level that will meet corporate profitability goals.
Position objective is to develop and manage the process, tools, and structure to enable the source team and liaison office network staff to negotiate cost from a position of product cost component knowledge.
Position is not responsible for operational, seasonal product cost negotiations.
Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:
Create the vision and establish the strategy and direction for all phases of the Columbia Sportswear Company apparel product costing process. Vision needs to be global in scope and established on a strategic, tactical and operational basis. Actively explain and promote the vision and strategic direction through clear communication with regard to vision, work focus, and work expectations.
Collaborate with merchandising, design, development, sourcing, and liaison offices to build the costing process, procedures, infrastructure, and tools needed to achieve the costing objectives defined in the strategy. Areas of key focus would include; developing a cost component database, enabling “design to price point” competency, accurate precosting, cost training. Direct and monitor the successful implementation of the process and tools needed to achieve price margin objectives.
Act as the voice and face for apparel manufacturing on costing process issues, and be proactive in addressing costing process issues with other functions. Create a presence for costing process management.
Establishes the tools to continually monitor costing variables in countries where Columbia Sportswear manufactures product. Factors would include wage rates, productivity variables, and other related cost associated with garment construction. Also monitors commodity cost trends and provides fact based information to sourcing and liaison offices to assist in cost negotiations.
Work with internal functions to develop strategies to increased margins and profitability through analysis of alternative product engineering options.
Responsible for Human Resource administration for the costing function. Develop and execute the effort in succession planning, organizational development, establishing training programs, salary administration, and hiring. Teach and lead by example. Develops subordinates through providing challenging task and responsibilities. Manage with courage when required with non-performers.
Serve as a resource in resolving complex problems in the apparel organization
Specific Job Skills:
Working knowledge of managing a costing process, procedures, and costing database
Comprehensive working knowledge of garment construction methods
Working knowledge of garment and textile manufacturing processes, factory evaluation techniques and vendor compliance requirements.
Understanding of apparel product process from product concept through to order delivery from the factory.
Knowledge and understanding of forecasting, buy planning, factory loading, capacity planning
