Distinguished Engineer

The DCG Compute Strategist has overall responsibility to drive the long-term compute/server strategy for Cisco’s Data Center Group. The responsibilities encompass three general areas at Cisco:
1. DCG CTO office lead for Unified Computing System (UCS) long-term technology roadmap.
2. Compute lead for converged infrastructure / unified data center technology strategy, working closely with peers in networking, storage, virtualization and automation/manageability.
3. DCG CTO office representative to Cisco CTO Forum for high-impact corporate programs like Internet of Things.
Specifically:
• Identifies
o Key technology transitions that Cisco should drive or closely follow to continue differentiating our UCS. Examples are: alternative instruction set architectures, co-processor optimizations (eg, GPU), next-gen non-volatile memory, physical virtualization (MRIOV).
o Key emerging workloads/applications/use cases that can drive growth for UCS. Examples are: Big data analytics, Hosted (cloud-based) high-performance computing, micro server.
o Further opportunities for convergence between compute and network infrastructure to deliver the next-generation of Fabric Computing.
• Recommends
o New design centers and evolutionary vectors for UCS product lines, working in partnership with Product Management, R&D leadership, Field leadership and the senior executive team at DCG.
o Surgical advanced development projects designed to shape new conventional wisdom for the extended DCG leadership team. Will oftentimes supervise some of these projects through an abbreviated version of our execution lifecycle, including status reports.
o Influences strategic partner roadmaps (eg, Intel, Microsoft, Fusion IO, etc) to leverage industry R&D for Cisco benefit. Proactively proposes joint R&D collaboration opportunities within this eco-system.
• Networks broadly across Cisco’s CTO community to identify “Cisco on Cisco” opportunities for sharing/leverage of Cisco-wide IP. For example, partnering with our Video/Collaboration, WebEx and Service Provider teams to standardize UCS as Cisco’s foundational compute platform

• Contributes to Cisco corporate / business development processes via exploration and diligence opportunities leading to equity investments, M&A or partnerships.
• Leads competitive analysis at a technology level for our server competitor ecosystem (Dell, IBM, HP, Lenovo, others). Provides technology leadership for product marketing’s competitive analysis process.
• Maintains relationships with key customer / customer account teams to identify early-adopter opportunies and validate strategy findings and recommendations.
Qualifications:
• Bachelors of Science in a relevant engineering or computer science discipline.
• Minimum 20 years’ experience in relevant R&D, roadmap planning and/or strategy planning.
• Minimum 5 years’ executive experience at Sr. Director / VP level dealing with product development, research and/or product planning. People management experience for a professional staff a must.
Requirements:
• Deep understanding of contemporary and emerging instruction set architectures; microprocessor and/or server development experience preferred.
• Broad knowledge of contemporary and emerging operating systems, application workloads, especially from a performance perspective.
• Desired knowledge in I/O (storage, networking, IPC) and manageability (baseboard management, provisioning, orchestration, monitoring, triage).
• Broad knowledge of infrastructure requirements for virtualized environments and cloud environments (IaaS, PaaS).
