Principal Voice Engineer

Job Description

An engineering position whose primary role will be to lead in the creation of advanced networking solutions that span multiple technology verticals (e.g. data, voice, cloud…etc).  The principal engineer will advise, guide and mentor lead, senior, staff and junior engineers in the fulfillment of tasks associated with both tactical and strategic initiatives and will be independently responsible for fulfilling large strategic efforts.  The principal engineer may also be engaged to lead and/or assist in special projects as requested by senior leadership pertaining to specific technologies or solutions.

Responsibilities:

    * Lead the voice engineering team in the design, implementation and support of Cbeyond’s voice network to include the creation of detailed architecture drawings and documentation.
    * Validate and approve voice architecture designs to ensure it aligns with the financial guidance provided by product and executive management.
    * Initiate RFIs and RFPs and lead the identification, evaluation, recommendation and eventual selection of technology vendors to include the creation of a vendor analysis and decision document.
    * Maintain good working relationships with key vendors to keep abreast of emerging technologies and to ensure support continuity.
    * Keep abreast of all new technologies and remain engaged with all applicable industry standards groups.
    * Own and fulfill large strategic or tactical projects within voice engineering and provide timely updates to management regarding progress and risks to integrity and timelines.
    * Work cross functionally to craft implementation plans and project timelines for deployment of new voice architecture into the Cbeyond network.
    * Mentor less experienced engineers to help them grow their knowledge and expertise as an engineer and professionally.

Requirements

Required

    * Bachelor/Master of Science degree in engineering or computer science or at least (15)+ years experience within a service provider voice architecture or operational engineering group.
    * An industry certification in a discipline related to voice or network technologies.
    * Expert knowledge of data network elements such as IP routers, Ethernet switches, EoC hardware, firewalls…etc.
    * Expert knowledge of voice network elements such as Class 4/5 switching platforms and associated ancillary equipment such as Media Gateways and Session Border Controllers.
    * Expert knowledge of IPv4 & IPv6 network technologies such as IP addressing (CIDR, VLSM, HEX), ARP…etc.
    * In-depth knowledge of IP telephone technologies such as SIP, MGCP & H.323.
    * In-depth knowledge of VoIP CODECS such as G.711 and G.729.
    * Expert knowledge of Layer-2 network technologies including Ethernet WAN, MEF services (ELINE, ELAN, EVPN), IEEE standards 802.1x & 802.3xx, 802.1ad Q-n-Q, 802.1q VLAN tagging, Ethernet OAM 802.3ah and 802.1ag and Provider Bridges (MAC in MAC).
    * Expert knowledge of IP related protocols such as OSPF, BGP-4, MPLS (MP-BGP/RSVP/LDP).
    * Expert knowledge of IP QoS technologies; DiffServ, classification/marking, queuing, and traffic conditioning.
    * In-depth knowledge of cloud infrastructure including servers, server virtualization and network based storage.
    * In-depth understanding of protocol analyzers (i.e. Etherreal).
    * Expert in the use of the Spirent Smartbits testing solutions.
    * Must have demonstrated proficiency in operating systems to include Mac OS X Lion, Windows XP/7, Unix (or Unix variants) and/or Linux experience is a plus.

Desirable

    * UNIX/Linux administration experience.
    * Excellent organizational, verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills with a high degree of attention to detail.
    * Must possess strong interpersonal skills and have the ability to interact with all levels of employees in a professional manner.
    * As an essential function of this position, the employee must be able to handle high levels of stress satisfactorily and be congenial with other employees and customers at all times.
