Head Teller

JOB SUMMARY

 

Under general direction, while conforming to established policies and procedures, is responsible for assisting walk-in and drive-up customers by providing high quality customer service and daily settlement principally for the following activities: processing deposit account and loan transactions, cashing checks, selling money orders and travelers’ checks, opening new accounts, handling IRA accounts, and maintaining account records.  Uses knowledge of bank products and services to promote, sell and cross sell same.  Identifies customer needs and communicates the appropriate bank services to fill those needs.  This function coordinates the activities of the teller line and may perform Customer Service Representative duties.

 
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1.       Assists tellers in the performance of their duties.

 

2.       While representing the bank to customers in a courteous and professional manner. provides prompt, efficient and accurate service in processing transactions.   Describes new accounts, including all types of checking, savings, and safe deposit box rental.

 

3.       Assists customers with financial needs by regularly cross-selling such bank services as residential and construction mortgage loans, installment loans, land contract collections, retirement accounts, certificate accounts, checking accounts, safe deposit boxes, payroll deposit, automatic payments and withdrawals and guaranteed payment checks.  Identifies and pursues opportunities to promote, sell and cross sell the bank’s products and services.  Effectively answers inquiries regarding banking products, services, and other matters.  Responsible for identifying customers who may benefit from specialized services and refers them to the proper department.

 

4.       Processes a variety of complex account transactions. Receives cash and negotiable instruments for deposit, inspects and verifies negotiable instruments, verifies cash amounts received, accepts withdrawal authorizations, verifies signatures, investigates account holds, and obtains necessary authorizations.  Explains penalty interest, ensures accuracy of cash amounts paid out, prepares checks or money orders, etc.

 

5.       Receives payments on loan accounts.  Inspects and verifies negotiable instrument and cash offered for payment, ensures that payment equals coupon amount, verifies acceptance, and obtains proper authorization of amounts less than the coupon amount.  Enters payments received into the bank’s records via on-line computer terminal.

 

6.       Manages currency levels within established limits.

 

7.       Opens a variety of new checking and savings, certificates and IRA accounts, and determines customers’ needs.  Explains various account and ownership options, providing the counseling necessary to meet the stated needs, and obtaining the required information.  Prepares all documents and paper work, assists customer with signing documents necessary to complete transactions, receives initial deposits and/or transfers funds from existing accounts or prepared sight draft to obtain funds from other sources, and enters transactions in customers’ account records.

 

8.       Performs a variety of additional customer service transactions, such as accepting stop-payment orders. Closes out rentals of safe deposit boxes, and sets up such tasks as pre-authorized transactions, direct deposits, and change of address.

 

9.       Performs such administrative duties as filing, preparing form letters and billings completing transaction-generated paper work, and verifying incoming cash shipments.

 

10.    Balances daily transactions and assists other tellers in balancing daily transactions, verifying tickets, counting cash and daily balancing of the teller area. Helps tellers with complex work related matters, i.e. check cashing, loan set-ups and interest penalties.

 

11.    Stays advised of new developments in bank products and services.  Is familiar with products and services currently available.

 

12.    Performs other duties as assigned.

 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

·         This position coordinates the activities of the teller line.

                                                                                         
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

·         A high school education or equivalent.

·         Successful completion of teller training courses.

·         One to two years of job-related experience, including formal teller experience plus training in the customer service area, opening new accounts, selling and redeeming bonds and selling travelers’ checks.

 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

·         A high level of interpersonal skills necessary to represent the bank in a positive manner in dealing with customer/teller transactions.

·         Demonstrated good mathematical and reasoning skills.

·         Willingness to work unpredictable hours, sometimes exceedingly long in order to accommodate unusually heavy customer traffic or automation failures

·         Ability to stand for extended periods.

·         Knowledge of an on-line teller terminal and standard office equipment to include calculators and PC keyboard.

·         Ability to function as an effective team member.

·         Ability to withstand a high degree of pressure.  Exposed to robbery, a potentially hazardous condition.  Receives detailed instructions and procedures to be followed to minimize risk.
