Systems Analyst

   
This position plays a key role within the Data Management Team and has three primary areas of responsibility:
- Utilizing Capella-specific expertise and technical knowledge to consult with internal departments on systems, data or reporting challenges and opportunities or university initiatives
- Developing complex queries from Capella's enterprise systems to audit the quality of the data or provide information for decision-making
- Sharing knowledge of IT systems, business policy and practice, reporting best practice and technological possibilities through training and other collaborative endeavors with Capella business partners

The position requires a combination of analytical and technical skills in conjunction with a solid understanding of business policy and process across the university. The ideal candidate possesses a combination of functional, analytical and technical skills reflecting traditional business analyst, developer and functional analyst roles. Knowledge of higher education processes, best practices in data management and reporting, substantial experience with administrative systems and a strong technical and analytical background will allow this individual to evaluate the current state and take a proactive approach to data management and reporting issues. Collaboration with functional, technical and reporting units across the university is a critical component of this position as the state of data quality, administrative systems, and impact of process and data changes are analyzed. The position serves as a resource to numerous departments as new processes are planned, system changes are envisioned or implemented, analytical reporting systems are developed, or critical initiatives are planned and executed.

Responsibilities
- Utilize knowledge of academic policy, business process, and technology to review areas of risk and compliance with data management standards in areas of system configuration, data capture, data entry practices and processes; investigate identified issues; report on underlying data quality; and recommend mitigation strategies to achieve compliance, ensuring that sufficient quality audits are developed to monitor ongoing quality
- Utilize appropriate analytical tools (e.g., SQL, SQL Server Reporting Services, Visual Studio) to provide critical information that supports operational processing and drives and informs decision making
- Develop SQL code that ensures alignment between business requirements and technical solutions
- Provide consultation to other departments in area of system design, functionality and reporting
- Recognize data dependencies and impacts across the university systems and utilize that understanding to provide early identification of impacts on data quality when there are academic or business policy changes, processes are redefined or changed and/or systems are updated or changed so that proactive remedies can be implemented to preserve complete and accurate data
- Create and present training materials to facilitate understanding of system functionality, reporting and data structure
- Troubleshoot systems, data and reporting issues as appropriate
- Collaborate and consult with EIA/BI developers and analysts in the design and implementation of the EDW
    
- Experience with enterprise systems (preferably in higher education) and solid understanding of underlying data structure, integrations between systems, and reporting
- Demonstrated ability to investigate data anomalies or conflicting information in a logical and comprehensive manner so that conclusions easily translate into actionable steps for resolution
- Ability to bridge gap between technical and functional knowledge bases and communicate effectively with constituents in both groups
- Demonstrated analytical, technical, and creative problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently, managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Demonstrated record of implementation of innovative practices and problem solving
- Exceptional oral and written communications skills; ability to communicate with strong credibility and confidence
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels of the organizational hierarchy
- Ability to analyze issues from the 'big picture' perspective and identify inter-relationships and inter-dependencies
- Advanced SQL skills (MS and Oracle)
- Advanced computer skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, MS Project, and other query tools
- Minimum 5 years experience in a data-centric or IT position (or equivalent experience with analytics or programming)
- Bachelors degree (IT or analytic-related field preferred)

Recommended
- Understanding of external reporting requirements for higher education institutions
- Demonstrated experience with applied statistics, data analysis, and other programming languages such as SAS, SPSS or query-generation tools
- Experience with functionality of PeopleSoft's Human Capital Management, Student Administration and/or Customer Relationship Management systems
- Detailed understanding of current Capella systems, system architecture, and integrations between systems
