Control Systems Specialist

THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Control Systems Specialist will be a part of a team that is accountable for the reliability and availability of all DCS (Distributed Control System) and control system assets for the Kirby project area. The Control Systems Specialist will have an opportunity to provide guidance and procedural consistency to the full life cycle of Control Systems, including development, commissioning, start up, operations, and turnaround/maintenance activities.

HOW WILL YOU MAKE YOUR MARK?
• Provide programming and troubleshooting for all PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), HMIs (Human Machine Interfaces), and DCSs
• Interpret and advice on technically complex issues for control systems
• Work with facilities and process engineers to develop and implement control philosophies and logic descriptions
• Assist in new project design, equipment selection, spare parts requirements and construction inspections including both capital projects and operational process control optimization
• Perform advanced tuning of interdependent processes
• Identify reliability issues and high maintenance cost “bad actor” equipment and control systems, and provide recommendations for improvement. Assist with failure analysis, identify required upgrades and develop plans for implementation
• Assist in developing instrument standards and specifications pertaining to installation, maintenance, and reliability
• Work with the IS (Information Systems) group to integrate networking requirements on new and existing systems for control and data collection
• Champion an Alarm Management Philosophy and ensure that new and existing control systems are consistent with that philosophy
• Work with EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) companies on evaluation and selection of control systems, data collection hierarchy, and networking solutions for new projects
• Participate in the Process Safety Management programs:
o Safeguarding
o HAZOP
o P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation Design) reviews
o Equipment Integrity
o Risk Management
o Operating and Maintenance Procedures
o Process Change Review
o Incident and Accident investigations
• Ensure drawing as-builts are completed and submitted for drafting
• Develop and maintain a system for managing software and hardware updates for PLC and DCS systems, system backups, and emergency plans. Ensure that all PLC, DCS and HMI changes are recorded and that system backups are made regularly and stored in a secure location
• Assist with the development and updating of procedures for instrument maintenance, calibration and spare parts
• Maintain and update master instrument index and instrument data sheets
• Work with planners and operations to plan and schedule routine repairs, PMs, equipment enhancements, program changes and turnarounds based on production/steam forecasts and capital projects
• Expedite emergency high value/priority repairs when required
• Keep informed of new and emerging instrumentation technologies that are applicable to thermal operations

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Typically 10+ years of industry experience with Journeyman Certificate or Technical Diploma
• Familiarity with and understanding of:
o Working in a heavy industrial setting
o Control systems in thermal operations
o Programming in DeltaV, as well as demonstrated knowledge of CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System)
• A valid Class 5 driver’s licence and excellent safety record are required

For your information:
Transportation and camp accommodations will be provided, based on a 4 on 3 off schedule (starting mid 2012). Flexible schedule and regular travel to Calgary and site will be required over the next 12-18 months during the engineering phase of the project.

This position will be based at our Kirby SAGD plant near Lac La Biche, AB.
