HR and Welfare Officer

Key Responsibilities: HR Deliverables * Delivery of comprehensive HR services to staff and managers * Ensure HR processes and systems are administered effectively within client business unit * Being the initial point of contact for all HR issues and escalating to the Head of HR where appropriate * Contributing to the development of effective Group HR processes and relationships * Co-ordinates the starter and leaver process for staff * Assist with the collation and processing of payroll changes, advices, reports and associated HR correspondence * Compiling HR Letters such as Maternity, job title changes and pay amendments. * Tracking and following up on probation reminders and all associated paperwork * Updating the company absence and time management systems * Understand the corporate message and deliver consistently to potential and existing staff * Support in other HR administrative activities and other areas of the HR team as required, for example supporting the Recruitment team in search and selection of candidates and the smooth running of assessment centres Pastoral Role * Dealing with a learner who is in some form of distress and not finding it easy to cope alone * Dealing with health, safety and welfare issues * Dealing with issues that may contravene the Equality Act, such as, but not limited to, bullying, discrimination and personal characteristics * Ensuring that those with disabilities have appropriate additional adaptations and H&S support to be able to work within the normal environment * Dealing with personal, social and group behaviour in a sensitive and sympathetic way * Directing learners to appropriate action where they feel aggrieved about some aspect of their learning, or about a member of their learner group or employer team * Supporting learners to address their own issues to motivate personal growth and individual development, based on self-organisation and self-motivation, and in being pro-active with their own learning and academic progress * Passing on real concerns to senior staff when dealing with learners who need additional support, that may be via an external agency * Liaising with placement supervisors to deal with personal behaviour from the learner that is a cause for concern, and putting in place action plans to improve the learner. * Keeping confidential the information that needs this level of support, but also maintaining profile notes that indicate actions taken to assist, support and mentor that can be made available to the appropriate members of the senior team to assist in decision-making relating to the learner in any way. PERSON SPECIFICATION Knowledge * HR generalist experience of handling diverse HR issues * Ideally, previous Welfare, or Health & Safety or Occupational Health or Pastoral role experience or exposure to environment Skills * Ideally pastoral or welfare skills. Where candidate has no former Welfare experience, consideration will be given to good evidence of active listening and engagement skills, examples of supporting colleagues in difficult situations etc * Excellent communication skills - both written and oral, with the ability to relate to all employees and management at all levels, particularly able to engage with young people * Excellent presentation skills Qualities * Ability to deal sensitively and tactfully with all situations ensuring confidentiality at all times * Ability to work professionally and on own initiative, setting own objectives and presenting own decisions There is also the opportunity for CIPD study support for the right candidate
